Flood Preparation Steps in Cherry Valley

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

Taking Time to Prepare for a Possible Disaster can Pay off During a Storm

Among the most costly and frequent natural disasters, floods often occur after a hurricane or many days of sustained rain. Flash floods happen suddenly from water rapidly rising in a low-lying area or stream. You need to learn ahead of time what to do to keep your family safe. You need to know of a reputable flood damage remediation company as well who can help you afterward, such as SERVPRO.

Preparing in Advance
Be sure you and your Cherry Valley home are ready for a flood in advance. You’ll be able to keep you and your family safe, and perhaps lessen the amount of flood damage that your home sustains.  Put together an emergency preparedness kit and make an evacuation plan which includes any pets. Keep informed about your community’s response plans and risk for flooding.

Remember that standard homeowner's insurance policies will not cover flooding, but flood insurance does. SERVPRO can work with you and your insurance company after the flood to make sure you get the compensation you need for repairs.

Right Before the Flood
Have a battery operated radio you can use to listen to the local area station for the latest updates and information? Be ready to evacuate fast, and know what your routes and destinations are. Find a local emergency shelter where you can all go.

Check your emergency kit and any items that are in short supply or missing need to be replenished. Medical supplies and medications are of particular importance. Keep the kit nearby and accessible.

Staying Safe Indoors During a Flood
First turn off water mains and power if you are instructed to by local authorities. Boil tap water until water sources are deemed safe and avoid contact with floodwater. It can be contaminated with sewage, or contain dangerous animals or insects.

Keep listening to the radio for the latest information and any updates. Do not use electrical appliances which are flooded or any gas. Throw away any food that has come into contact with flood waters.

Staying Safe Outdoors During a Flood
Do not walk, drive or swim through floodwaters. A mere six inches of fast-flowing water can knock you down, and two feet will float a car. If you are stuck on a road where water is rapidly rising, quickly get out of the car and get to higher ground. Do not walk on river banks or beaches and don’t let your children play near flood water.

Do not come into contact with the floodwater and stay out of areas subject to flooding. Underpasses, low spots, dips, washes, canyons, etc. can quickly become filled with water.

Recovery
Let family and friends know you are safe and register yourself on the Safe and Well website. If you have been evacuated, only return when authorities say it is safe.

As soon as you can, contact a SERVPRO technician for help so they can come out to your property quickly, assess the damage and create a plan for remediation. They have professional equipment to remove the standing water and dry your home and possessions out. Dehumidifiers and dryers, plus protective gear are just some of the things the technician will bring.

SERVPRO of South Worcester has someone standing by at all times to take your call. When your home suffers flood damage, don’t hesitate to contact us at (508) 757-7885.

Understanding Types of Water

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup.

There are three types of water. Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean. The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous. Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster. Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

Consider taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.

Damage from Clean Water

• Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.

• Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.

• Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.

• Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.

• Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to moisture to a safe place.

• Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.

• Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.

• Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Damage from Contaminated Water

• Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage. Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.

• Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.

• Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.

• Do not use household fans to dry the structure; air flow could spread contaminants.

• Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.

When you have a water damage, don’t leave your property to chance. Call SERVPRO® of South Worcester (508)757-7885.

Necessary Steps Towards Fire Restoration

3/8/2019 (Permalink)

Necessary Steps Towards Fire Restoration

One of the most unexpected events is when a fire breaks out. The fire damage that occurs may be minor or significant depending on how severe the fire is. It is during this period that one needs to call for assistance from a restoration company to come and help with the Fire Damage Restoration Process. They deal with both smoke damage and soot damage amongst others.

Fire in homes or fire in businesses all require a restoration company that helps contain the soot damage and smoke damage. Commercial Fire Damage could be hazardous both physically and financially. Hence, there is a need to contact a company that deals with fire damage to help in restoring back the business. Every second that passes determines the amount of money one loses in a commercial fire damage.

A restoration company helps in the fire cleanup which ensures that soot damage and smoke damage are contained because of fire in business. Sometimes, the companies will even board up damaged windows to prevent further spread of the smoke smell.

For somebody experiencing a fire in homes or fire in business, it is important to contact an emergency restoration company that acts promptly to one’s call for help. The fire damage restoration involves a few steps towards a major fire cleanup. Discussed below is the basic procedure for dealing with commercial fire damage or home fire damage.

1. Contact the Company

Once a fire breaks out, the first instinct is to call a company that will be able to take care of the fire damage restoration. Call one that deals with emergency services and is available 24hrs and is on speed dial. Companies that operate all day are able to reach the designated place with ease and faster.

2. Fire Damage Analysis

Upon arrival, whether it is a fire in home or fire in business, the company will fully assess to determine how much fire damage is evident and if there is still smoke smell. All this helps the firm strategize on what measures they should take to do a fire cleanup. The fire damage restoration process is quite involving and needs a company that can deliver and identify the soot damage and smoke damage caused by the fire.

3. Board up

Board up is a crucial aspect when dealing with the fire cleanup process. Most times, fire damage affects the walls, ceiling, and windows. Hence, the firm needs first to board up all damaged windows to avoid further damage before they continue the fire cleanup process.

4. Smoke and Soot Removal

Smoke damage and soot damage may cause the ceilings and chimneys to darken. Hence, the firm has a laid out procedure on what materials to use during a fire in business and fire in homes. The smoke smell that comes with the fire may cause difficulty in breathing, and it’s important during the whole fire cleanup procedure, that asthmatic people stay away from the affected site.

5. Clean Up

After using the necessary equipment for the soot removal, the cleaning process begins which is geared towards eradicating the smoke smell. An experienced company will clean the whole area regardless of if it is a commercial fire damage or otherwise. It helps in making the area odorless. Different machines are used to ensure the place has no trace or sign of a fire. Vacuum cleaners and air scrubbers come in handy when ensuring that they clean up the affected rooms. During the cleanup, they ensure they board up the windows to reduce chances of more damage happening.

6. Back to Normal

The last step through this whole process is ensuring that there is renovation done on the damaged area. The board up done before the cleanup, in this case, has to have windows installed or repaired, while walls are repainted among other restructurings.
The restoration process is quite important for every person affected by a fire. It is not something that one can do it themselves but rather, a restoration company covers all aspects of the fire. Companies take homeowners through some primary prevention measures to avoid some minor fires.

SERVPRO South Worcester Smoke and Soot Cleanup

3/5/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of South Worcester will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Mold Damage Doesn't Need to Happen in Worcester Home and here’s why!

2/21/2019 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO Mold Damage Doesn't Need to Happen in Worcester Home and here’s why! Mold is not a problem for SERVPRO of South Worcester! Let us help you, Call Toady! (508)757-7885.

Do you have mold damage, Call SERVPRO of South Worcester!

It can happen to the best of homes, even those that are expertly maintained, simply because the cause is literally everywhere. What is it? Mold damage. Mold can damage any porous surface, from textiles to wood, drywall, and even concrete. Hard surfaces, such as stainless steel and porcelain can harbor mold, and while it is easier to clean to like-new condition, staining can result if the mold has been left on these types of surfaces for a substantially long period of time.

Worcester homeowners who have discovered water damage that has already dried up, or even the presence of water, might find that mold damage also is present. While it is impossible to remove 100% of mold and it's spores from any home, SERVPRO technicians are certified in mold remediation and skilled at removing the damage excess mold can cause. Removing excess mold to an acceptable level according to industry guidelines can help prevent mold damage from happening again.

When a home has mold damage, there is nothing in the home that remains risk-free. Anything can be attacked and overtaken by mold growth and subsequently damaged. Pillows, bedding, toys, books, carpeting, walls – in short, anything and everything can be overcome with mold, and many of those items can become mold damaged.

Prevention is always better than repair and restoration. At SERVPRO, we know how to do both. For the homeowner, it's much more cost-effective to prevent the problem from becoming larger than it should be. Using both EPA and IICRC standards, our technicians can ensure that any water damage of the past remains that way – in the past, and unable to come into the present to cause you grief by creating mold damage in your home.

Call us, SERVPRO of South Worcester at (508) 757-7885, for the prevention and removal of mold damage in your home and to your belongings. We are available 24/7, to answer your questions and to start working on protecting your home.

SERVPRO Can Help with Restoring your Treasured Items

Only when you are struggling to recover from fire damage do you realize the overwhelming number of things you have in your house, all vulnerable to the effects of the smoke and heat. Once the fire is out, and the structural damage to the building itself is being addressed, you move on to the dozens and dozens of items that have been damaged or soiled by the fire, or both. SERVPRO has developed a comprehensive protocol to manage the personal property and structural components in your home including fixtures and decorative items. Our extensive experience with fire restoration gives us a perspective we share with you as we strive to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Somehow the little things that are dirtied and damaged in a fire can cause the greatest emotional burden to the homeowner. When the window coverings you took such pains to coordinate with furnishings and wall color hang in grim, sooty disarray it is difficult to know where to start to fix the problem that seems bigger than draperies. Similarly, when the beautiful chandelier that lit up your family’s faces on holidays is coated with grime or vintage pictures of your forebears are streaked with inky residue and curl up from moisture, our promise to restore your possessions to pre-fire condition may ring a little hollow. Fire damage in Cherry Valley must be restored from the bottom up with every method and trick we have in our training toolbox. If the memories have to be trashed, it is impossible to feel like even a completely remodeled space is still your home. We won't let that happen.

We at SERVPRO understand that your home is so much more than ceilings and walls. Our technicians are trained in heirloom, document and picture restoration. A cherished lamp or the kitchen cabinets your father helped you build are worth the effort to restore, and we will develop a plan to do so. Our team is well schooled on how to turn back the clock on fire damage by using the correct cleaning products and proven methods so you can gaze on beloved portraits again by the light of your chosen fixtures. This focus does not mean we ignore serious fire damage issues behind walls and in the attic, but it is part of our balanced approach that makes us a trusted business in our communities.

Let us restore you home and your heart with the team at SERVPRO of South Worcester. A call to (508) 757-7885 will be answered 24/7 with an inspection of your fire damage scheduled as soon as possible.

Call SERVPRO for Smoke & Fire Restoration Services

Every time a fire starts inside a home, some level of fire damage occurs. Even if the fire stays in a small area, the smoke and soot quickly spreads through the air into other areas and creates soot damage very quickly. Those living in Worcester can cope with this problem affecting their living spaces best by having certified experts carry out the work involved.

Worcester homes affected by fire damage and soot accumulation need experienced mitigation experts. SERVPRO technicians have extensive training and become certified by the IICRC in fields such as Fire and Smoke Restoration (FSRT), Odor Control (OCT), and Applied Structural Drying (ASD).

Even small fire cleanup requires the skills learned in the pursuit of these three certificates, and our technicians continually keep these certificates up-to-date to serve you and your family better. Working together, they can quickly make it “Like it never even happened.”

Technicians skilled in fire and smoke restoration remove only the charred materials within a home and leave those areas that sustained only smoke damage for our cleaning technicians. Soot removal requires several steps. Items with extensive or elaborate detailing require a bit more work than items with smoother surfaces before attaining pre-fire condition. The use of "dry ice blasting" is used, if you have never herd of Ice Blasting, it is a method that can be utilized under specific conditions.

Our technicians with odor control management training help complete restoration by eliminating bad odors caused by deposits from the fire's smoke wherever they occur. By following air currents inside your home, our technician finds the locations of the most substantial deposits. Treatment of these areas renders odor-causing particles inert and unable to continue causing bad smells.

Elevated humidity can make odors from smoke even more pronounced, especially when the furnace runs or on unseasonably warm days. The water used to extinguish a small fire in our home soaks into absorbent materials and also evaporates as steam when making contact with the fire. Every home with fire damage also needs the moisture removed and completely dried out. This part of the process also helps guard against secondary water damage from developing in the not-so-distant future.

SERVPRO of South Worcester, Faster To Any Size Disaster, can be contacted at our local number, (508) 757-7885. Calling us is the first step toward restoration after any amount of fire damage affects your home.

Fire Damage Summer Safety Tips! Think SERVPRO call us!

Summer is synonymous with barbecues, parades and fireworks displays; but along with all the festivities are plenty of visits to emergency rooms-especially during July.

In 2013, eight people died and about 11,400 were injured badly enough to require medical treatment after fireworks-related incidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In addition to causing injury, fireworks are also responsible for thousands of house fires each year with millions of dollars in property damage.

There is nothing like firing up the grill during the summer months! Did you know, July is the peak month for grill fires? A backyard barbecue can become dangerous quickly if proper safety precautions aren’t considered. SERVPRO of South Worcester wants you to have an enjoyable and safe summer. Consider the following tips to ensure your summer celebrations are disaster-free!

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. n When using a charcoal grill, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container. n Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.
  • Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire. Children should never pick up fireworks that may be left over as they may still be active.
  • The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals.

Experienced Mold Remediation Specialists

Water damage issues in the house can lead to mold growth on various surfaces, increasing the risk of health effects. As such, homeowners in Worcester should act quickly when water leaks or spills occur. The best way to deal with mold problems in your home is hiring an experienced mold remediation company.

As an experienced mold damage restoration company in Worcester, SERVPRO is strategically located to respond quickly to your emergency. We have a team of highly trained, highly skilled professionals that can eliminate mold problems in your house and prevent future attacks. Our products are up to par with IICRC guidelines, ensuring a smooth and efficient restoration process.

When it comes to mold damage, prevention is always better than cure. Mold needs organic matter, a suitable temperature range, and most importantly, moisture, to thrive. Considering that indoor environments provide the first two criteria in most cases, high moisture levels for a prolonged period are the crucial factor.

Unfortunately, simply removing water and moisture rapidly when it appears is not always possible, even in the most obvious scenario like a flood. Sometimes water can penetrate covered areas such as under flooring, wallpapers, and appliances, leading to hidden mold growth. If you have concerns about mold problems in the hidden corners of your home, call SERVPRO immediately.

Once we eliminate all visible water and signs of mold damage, we still have to deal with high humidity and any saturated materials. For this, SERVPRO has industry-standard dehumidifiers that can help replace moist air with dry air. You should keep your doors and windows open when practical to increase ventilation or air movement.

Mold damage can also occur when there are undetected maintenance problems in your house leading to high ambient moisture, such as leaking air conditioners or dripping pipes. SERVPRO can come in and assess the damage before determining the most appropriate remediation procedure.

Your home should be a place of relaxation after a long day at work, but the presence of mold can compromise this comfort. If you are dealing with mold problems in your house, SERVPRO of South Worcester can deploy highly skilled mold damage remediation experts to control the situation. Call us anytime at (508) 757-7885.

Holding IICRC certificates in Water Damage Restoration (WRT), our employees know exactly what each factory needs to restore everything efficiently. Tracking water throughout your factory helps discover currently unknown locations, ensuring the removal of all water, even before it causes problems. We remove the water in your factory with appropriately sized equipment. Never too large or too small, our equipment efficiently eliminates the water imposing on your business operations.

Similar equipment helps us locate the source of the water so we can keep it from continuing to trouble your business operations.

Machinery and electronic equipment is more appropriately cared for by our qualified partners when damaged. Water Removal in Your Crawl Space

2/11/2019 (Permalink)

Rely on Professional Services to Remove Water from and Remediate Your Crawl Space

Crawl spaces are low areas building contractors in Cherry Valley may put under the first floor of a home, so there is access to necessary wiring and plumbing. They can also be storage areas under your home if you do not have a basement and the floor is concrete. However, standing water can build up sometimes in the area, causing a multitude of problems. It can be caused by a kitchen waste line leaking, a leaking sewer line, gutter downspouts incorrectly directed, sprinkler water coming through a crawl space’s vents, or a naturally-occurring high groundwater table.

When this happens, you need the professional help of a water removal remediation company. It is not recommended to do the water removal in your Cherry Valley crawl space yourself because proper remediation and water extraction requires particular expertise and equipment to handle the problem thoroughly. SERVPRO's IICRC-certified technicians are specially trained to handle this type of issue, and we can be reached at any time you need us. We move fast to get to your home.

We first need to get the standing water out of your crawl space. To do so, we have industrial strength truck-mounted pumps. The water must be removed before it starts to erode your foundation or create mold growth, and this is the fastest way to do so.

Since concrete is cooler than other kinds of materials, moisture can stay even after the standing water has been removed. The moisture left behind can create mold and mildew growth, so it is essential we dry the crawlspace out quickly, instead of letting it sit and dry on its own. The best way for us to do so is by using dehumidifiers and fans which we carefully place in your crawlspace to dry it out most efficiently.

The equipment is checked by SERVPRO staff daily and rearranged for optimal drying as needed. Once everything is completely dry, we sanitize the affected area as well.

SERVPRO of South Worcester can take care of your water removal problem in your crawl space in a short amount of time. Anyone in the areas of Cherry Valley, Worcester, and South Worcester should call us as soon as you recognize an issue by dialing (508) 757-7885.

How To Stay Safe In A Water Damaged Home In Cherry Valley

8/22/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage How To Stay Safe In A Water Damaged Home In Cherry Valley Once your home has been struck by a water catastrophe, it immediately becomes a much riskier place to move about and live in.

Staying Safe During A Water Catastrophe

Once your home has been struck by a water catastrophe, it immediately becomes a much riskier place to move about and live in. While we firmly recommend allowing SERVPRO technicians to provide all guidance and operate to the fullest extent of their ability, there may be times when you, the homeowner, must enter the damaged portion of your homes. If so, be sure to take these safety precautions beforehand.

Follow Our Guidance
SERVPRO is not here just for the simple water removal job in your Cherry Valley home - we are here to help with all aspects of the disaster. Our representatives are well-known for their approachability and communication skills, and this is perhaps most evident with safety rules. Our personnel is there to guide you on what you should and should not do around your home, and your safety is always their top priority. If we tell you to avoid an area or task, it is not for our poor intentions. These suggestions are to keep you out of harm's way and to prevent any further damage from occurring.

Face Masks
Water damage can create some harmful respiratory conditions, especially if mold has started to take root. Whenever you are near the damaged portion of your home, you should be wearing a face mask to keep out harmful chemicals and pathogens.

Gloves
A good pair of gloves is essential for doing anything in the damaged part of your home. They should be rubberized to avoid any risk of electrocution, thick to avoid rips and tears, and well-fitted to ensure as little water as possible reaches your skin. Try to avoid disposable gloves, as these do not provide suitable protection in a water damage scenario.

Long Sleeves
You should always wear long-sleeved clothing in a damaged area, even if it is a hot day. Long sleeves protect your skin from harmful chemicals and hazards, especially if the clothing is composed of a strong material.

SERVPRO of South Worcester is a locally-owned and operated branch of a national company with decades of experience removing and restoring water damage in homes like yours. Call us 24/7 at (508) 757-7885.

Can You Save Your Best Carpet From Mold When It Gets Wet in Cherry Valley?

8/15/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Can You Save Your Best Carpet From Mold When It Gets Wet in Cherry Valley? Drying out your wet carpet after an incident is our highest priority. Call our technicians after an event at your home so that we can remediate.

SERVPRO's Quick Actions can Help Prevent a Mold Infestation

It does not take much for a rug to get wet. Sometimes the culprit is extreme weather or run-off after a storm, but often a broken pipe or appliance is enough to soak a carpet through. After a carpet gets wet, the risk of mold growth is a genuine concern. Mold is a fungus, and as such, it likes to have moisture and an organic food source to sustain it. Unfortunately, carpet fibers are an excellent food source for mold, and once fungus gets into your carpet, it is hard to get it out again.

The best way to save your favorite carpet from mold damage after it gets wet in Cherry Valley is to call SERVPRO at once. The key to saving floor coverings from the fungus is to dry them out swiftly and thoroughly, so the spores do not have a chance to grow. Our IICRC-certified technicians have the skills and equipment necessary to dry your carpet fast.

When our team arrives, we start by extracting as much water from the carpet as possible. We understand that thorough extraction is key to the success of the drying process, which is why we use special tools such as wands and make several passes.

After extraction, the next step is drying your carpet. SERVPRO uses three types of air mover for optimum performance. Centrifugal air movers sit atop the carpet and blow air directly over the surface to encourage evaporation. Low profile air movers are similar to centrifugal and are used to direct air over the carpet. Low profile units can also be stacked and are light enough to move around. Finally, we use downdraft machines that pull warmer air downwards and spread it across the carpet. Downdraft units are useful for drying large areas.

Dehumidifiers are used to lower the moisture level in the air and hasten the drying process.

We understand that thorough drying is the only protection against mold growth. We use a range of equipment including moisture probes and penetrating moisture meters to measure the amount of dampness and make sure the job is complete.

Do not put your favorite carpet at risk of fungal growth. Call SERVPRO of South Worcester at (508) 757-7885 today for help.

Speedy Flood Damage Restoration Avoids Need to Reschedule Worcester Events

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Speedy Flood Damage Restoration Avoids Need to Reschedule Worcester Events Make sure that all events at your venue are remembered for the beauty of the room and the event celebrated there. Call SERVPRO after any accident.

SERVPRO Technicians are on the Job Quickly after Your Call to Make Sure that Your Business is Able to Meet Any and All Party Expectations

The beautiful and historic venues in our area add an element of elegance to weddings, graduations, and conferences, among other celebrations and ceremonies. Antiquated plumbing fails and floods without regard to schedules, threatening to require cancellation of events long-planned and anticipated. SERVPRO responds to such catastrophes fast, getting your agenda back on track.

A water main breaks, causing commercial flood damage in the main hall of your Worcester event center just hours before proud friends and families plan to gather for a medical school graduation. Scrambling to hold this significant event in one of the smaller areas of your building requires paring down the graduates’ guest lists. Discard this unacceptable notion and call us to restore the planned setting in time for the awarding of the diplomas.

The SERVPRO flood damage team springs into action. Our powerful water pump and extraction equipment are truck mounted, so we get to work even if the power is off temporarily. Our project manager assesses while the crew gets to work. We collect and remove the standing water before industrially sized air movers begin the drying process. Our technicians train extensively in advanced drying techniques, including measuring and then monitoring moisture levels throughout the affected areas to guide our efforts. If the air movers do not reduce the wetness fast enough, we bring in high-efficiency dehumidifiers to more rapidly reduce the moisture.

Water removal from carpeted areas is one of our specialties. If part of the targeted area has wall to wall floor coverings, we dedicate workers to the task of extracting water carefully from the fibers. Using the strong and efficient extraction vacuums is a task our team is certified to do without stretching or tearing the carpeting from its backing. Air movers and dehumidifiers help after in-place water extraction, positioned to dry both above and below the carpet.

The influx of water is the major issue, but SERVPRO also attends to the cleanup of items displaced, tipped over, or otherwise damaged during the floor. We understand your clients expect a memorable event, but not because the area appears devastated by the flooding. Our focus during every job is restoration to a preloss condition. The vastness of your physical plant does not change our goal. We bring in as many technicians as needed to achieve this objective in the time permitted, ensuring your event proceeds on time.

Major flooding is a disaster to which SERVPRO of South Worcester confidently responds, even in a large, commercial setting. One call to (508) 757-7885 brings the crews required to return your hall to its previous glory quickly, for the event of your clients' lifetimes.

Hurricane season has officially begun and in full effect. For the Atlantic, the season begins June 1 and runs through November 30. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season began in mid-May and also ends November 30. Hurricanes can be life-threatening as well as cause serious property threatening hazards such as flooding, storm surge, high winds and tornadoes and of course hurricanes. Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane. Another tip is to consider hurricane straps for your homes roof, they will ensure that your roof is stable onto the rest of your home. Understanding the Dangers of Mold

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can be ordinary...

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment, and they produce some very useful results. For example, yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads and other food products. Blue cheese’s unique flavor is attributed to mold, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold.

...or Unhealthy

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold and extended exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

Any water intrusion into your office or your home can result in mold growth. This intrusion of water can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks, and poor humidity control. When these issues are not addressed, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth.

Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments, but if the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply to a harmful level.

Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that may pose a health threat.

Take Precautions

If there is an ongoing moisture problem in the building, be alert for:

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong, a musty odor that may indicate mold is present.
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • Excessive humidity.

Help is here!

If you think you or your customer might have a mold problem, call SERVPRO of South Worcester - your local franchise professionals trained in mold remediation.

Commercial Mold Damage Negatively Affects Pet Stores In Cherry Valley

6/21/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Commercial Mold Damage Negatively Affects Pet Stores In Cherry Valley Many pet stores harbor mold that may contribute to the smell that hits you when you walk in. Call SERVPRO to investigate whether this is mold.

SERVPRO Technicians Tackle ANY Type of Mold Damaged Environment

From puppies playing, cats climbing around, and fish tanks everywhere, pet stores often seem like everything is clean and sanitized on a regular, ongoing schedule. However, areas that receive little or no maintenance can quickly become very problematic when left alone.

Mold does not take very long to begin growing when the correct conditions exist in a Cherry Valley pet store, and subsequent commercial mold damage often is a result. Employees are often busy taking care of your live inventory and customer needs, and more than a good wiping-down of surfaces, a deep-cleaning, is rare.

When young animals play in cages, spills happen, and puppies and kittens are not always blessed with good hygiene skills. Mold does not require water – mold requires moisture or extreme humidity, to grow well. Moisture can come from young animals' waste just as easily as it can originate from an overturned water bowl. Aquarium water can also evaporate, and provide moisture for mold's use.

Also, when cleaning liquids are left on surfaces to allow them to work at the grime left behind by young pets, any scratches on the surface can allow moisture to become trapped or even seep through to the underside of platform display areas. Mold might be found growing above in darker corners and where water bowls are frequently placed, but underneath might be full of mold.

When mold is allowed to grow prolifically because it remains unnoticed, the spores that are sent off during different life cycle stages can become released into the air and begin growing elsewhere. These new colonies can damage your bagged inventory, leather items, and food stocks. If mold damage is caught in time, much of your affected inventory can be saved and should not need to be destroyed.

Another concern about mold that people often have is centered on the possible health effects that mold can create. These concerns are also valid when it comes to young animals. Staying Safe When Chemical Agents Are Used For Commercial Water Removal In worcester

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Staying Safe When Chemical Agents Are Used For Commercial Water Removal In worcester The consequences of water damage can be huge, particularly for small businesses.

The consequences of water damage can be huge, particularly for small businesses. Ultimately, every day that you can’t operate represents lost profits. This is why a fast and efficient restoration service is essential. At SERVPRO, we have a broad range of techniques that we can use to dry, clean, and repair your property quickly. In some instances, this does involve the use of strong chemicals.

They might be cleaning products, chemical agents, or water treatments. If our technicians do plan to introduce any kind of chemical element to the restoration process, you will be fully informed. Do be aware, however, that your employees will not be allowed to access the affected area during this time. Commercial water removal is a complex process, and it requires your full cooperation.

This simple guide to the most commonly used restoration chemicals will give you some information so that you can keep your workers safe.

Antimicrobial Agents
This describes any chemical that is used to prevent the spread of microorganisms in water or on moist, damp materials. We will use these agents if we believe that black or gray liquid has entered the building, as it can be toxic.

Disinfectants
Our disinfectant products are not too dissimilar from the ones that your cleaners may use, but they are substantially stronger. They are able to kill 99% of all the organisms that they encounter, and they leave surfaces close to sterile. We may use formaldehyde, alcohol, or chlorine based products.

Sanitizers
The job of a sanitizer is to lower the number of microbes to a level that has been considered safe for ‘public use.’ Usually, sanitizing chemicals are combined with other cleaning agents, because they are not powerful enough to eradicate all organisms on their own. If bacteria remains and only sanitizer is used, there is a chance of it returning and we won’t take it.

Sterilants
Sterilants are very effective because they eradicate fungi spores as well. This prevents the spread of mold in areas that have been affected by water damage. The downside to these chemicals is that they can’t be applied to every surface. Some materials will become damaged if brought into contact with sterilant, so we’re very careful about how we use them.

Cooperation And Collaboration Will Keep You Safe
We’ll keep you in the loop at all times and explain what is happening throughout the restoration process. In exchange, we expect you to listen to our recommendations and vacate areas containing strong chemicals when advised. This is for your safety. You must inform all employees as to which spaces they can and cannot use during the repairs.

Don’t forget that SERVPRO of South Worcester is a local company. We are based in your area, so you can access our services at any time. We have access to state of the art drying equipment, and we can restore severely damaged items at our special facility. Call us 24/7 at (508) 757-7885

You don't need to suffer a house fire to have fire damage!

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage to Your Worcester Home

It is possible that your home might have actual fire damage even if it has never had a house fire. One of these situations is if your home has a fireplace that is often used during the colder months. Another occurrence of fire damage can be a result of malfunctioning furnaces. We have seen this all the time in Worcester.  Worcester area homes can develop both kinds of fire damage, instead of only one or the other type, if both fireplace and furnace are used to keep a home adequately heated during the bitterly cold winters. Faulty furnaces are much more dangerous than fireplaces are, in general. Small explosions may not seem to be important in an appliance that is used for heating, but those explosions get larger over time, not smaller. After a furnace begins doing this, which is called 'puff back,' replacement of the furnace with a new one is typically the only sufficient remedy. Residues from puff back are not confined to an area near the furnace but can be expelled wherever there is a heat vent, also. These areas on walls and ceilings, and sometimes floors, can discolor painted and papered surfaces. Paneling can also be cleaned of oily deposits. When fireplaces are used, different residues, including soot and even creosote, accumulate around the exterior. Stone and brick can hold a significant amount of these substances within their rough surfaces, and a build-up of these carcinogenic substances can be highly flammable. On top of being unsightly to the eye, blackened fireplace facings can be dangerous to your health and your home. Fireplaces regain their new look after being cleaned on their exterior facing and their interiors, as well. Their structural components of stone or brick allow for this. Even though they may look dirtier than any other area in your home, cleaning can completely restore their appearance. We at SERVPRO can clean both of these types of fire damage from your home. The same techniques we use to clean and detail personal belongings, furniture, and other housewares are also relevant for fireplaces and the areas around them. When you have fire damage that makes your home look less appealing than what it should, call us, SERVPRO of South Worcester, at (508) 757-7885. We are always ready to answer your call and help you restore any area of your home.

Cherry Valley Fire & Smoke Damage Services

Odor & Smoke Removal and Restoration in Cherry Valley by SERVPRO

Much of the restoration cost after a fire comes from cleaning smoke and soot residues off the structural and personal property. These same residues also result in hundreds of dollars in costs to eliminate the smells left behind as well.

Removing the odors from fire damage in Cherry Valley is a multi-level task. To return a home to its original state, SERVPRO uses Multiple-Phase Odor Control.

The first phase is Chemical Containment. The task for us here is to block odor molecules from vaporizing into the air. Technicians spray a deodorizer directly on smoke residues; forming a barrier that slows down or stops the evaporation process.

Vapor Odor Control is the second phase. Technicians release deodorant vapors to counteract smoke odor particles that are already airborne. We use granular agents that release different odors which are remarkably effective after smoke damage.

Thermal Fogging is the final step. We disperse solvent-based deodorants using thermal foggers. These devices use heat to break down the deodorant to the same particle size as the odors. They bond with the odors, changing their chemical composition, and effectively neutralizing them. This a dry fog that evaporates within several hours, leaving almost no moisture that can stain surfaces. It is ideal for furniture fabrics, drapes and even building material such as drywall.

Not every home requires all three phases to eliminate odors. After each one, our technicians wait and determine if they need to move to the next one or if they only need to repeat a phase.
Eliminating the odors from a fire may seem like a small part of the restoration process. It is not as obvious a problem as a burned-out structural support, but a lingering smoke scent is a continual reminder of the disaster that struck your home.

SERVPRO of South Worcester understands how important it is to put the crisis behind you and is here to help. Call today at (508) 757-7885.

Facts about Flooding

6/4/2018 (Permalink)

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is a potential for suffering flood damage.

Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you won't in the future. In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $3 billion in annual losses in the United States. Commercial flood claims average more than $75,000.

According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster. The ARC offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water. Keep your pets out of the water too.

If a flood does strike your home or business, contact SERVPRO of South Worcester. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. SERVPRO of South Worcester is prepared to handle any sized disaster. The sooner work begins; the sooner order can be restored.

when fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of South Worcester will help you take it back.

Flood Damage Protection for Our Own Worcester Colleges and Universities!

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Flood Damage Protection for Our Own Worcester Colleges and Universities! Dorm flood damage can quickly affect many residents. Call SERVPRO to quickly remediate so that the students can get back to learning.

SERVPRO can Help Get Things Under Control Whether the Flood Damage is Minor of Major

Many colleges and university's in our area offer dormitory living to their students. Plumbing problems, whether or not traceable to the inhabitants of the dorms, threaten living conditions for high numbers of students. Managing and recovering from the effects of clogged toilets or overflowing showers is easier with a professional restoration company like SERVPRO on duty.

Maybe just the result of an accident or mistake, or sometimes a prank with malicious intent, flood damage in a Worcester college or university is a serious problem for officials. Students and their families pay significant amounts of money for dormitory accommodations, and there are few alternatives for other living options if flooding makes rooms uninhabitable. We have the staff and the equipment to restore water damaged common areas and individual rooms quickly, limiting the disruption for the students and protecting the institution.

Flooding from toilets and showers contains contaminants, and the professional technicians we employ at SERVPRO know how to manage gray and black water. We extract the tainted water and dispose of it according to local regulations. Once the water is gone, we sanitize the affected areas with appropriate disinfectants. Drying with air movers and dehumidifiers completes the process and contents of the dorms remained unaffected.

Any contents in rooms or lounges that are porous risk permanent contamination. SERVPRO technicians evaluate beds, furnishings, and floor coverings that were saturated with the flow of water to determine whether they are safe to use or should be discarded. Machine washable and dryable items stay, but immersed articles that cannot be laundered or dry cleaned must go.

Our staff investigates where water migrated after the flood, searching for hidden areas that could be breeding grounds for molds. Walls painted with oil-based enamel clean up and disinfect well, but soaked drywall and insulation indicate even some structural elements need to be removed and replaced because there is no sure way to be certain they can be made safe. Tile or linoleum flooring responds well to sanitization, but carpeting, especially padding, often requires replacement. SERVPRO consults with insurers and the school officials to make the best decisions to restore the dorm without risking the students’ health and well-being.

Consider SERVPRO of South Worcester a teammate when errant plumbing flooding damages student living quarters. Call (508) 757-7885 day or night and welcome our flood damage team within hours.

Water Damage in Cherry Valley can affect even the best-cared for homes

11/20/2016 (Permalink)

Water Damage Water Damage in Cherry Valley can affect even the best-cared for homes Don't let water damage in your Cherry Valley home keep you from living your life, The experts at SERVPRO will make it "Like it never even happened."

No matter how much effort you put into caring for and maintaining your home, accidents do happen. Water woes can start inside, in the form of leaks, overflows, and other mishaps, or come from the outdoors in the form of floods, rainwater, or even melting ice. Once water has entered, it's imperative that it be cleaned up and removed, before it can damage your home.

Your Cherry Valley home needs to be protected from all types of water damage. When you have any of the above situations or another, that is allowing water to enter your home, you need to stop the water from entering, and then clean up the mess. Because water does not stay still unless it is in a container, it's important to call for professionals to get rid of the water that you can't see.

SERVPRO professionals have training in dealing with water of all sources. They know how to not only eliminate the water itself, but also any pathogens it can carry with it, or pick up and spread through your home. Extraction of water only rids your home of the moisture, but not the pathogens. We can make your home safe again, "Like it never even happened."

Water can damage your home in many ways. It can lead to secondary water damage, also. Primary damage from water results in soiled and waterlogged personal belongings, and possible contamination when the water is from a source that is contaminated. This can include carpeting, clothing, toys and books, cabinetry, and many other things.

When your home's windows are open, they can allow rain to enter, spilling out onto the floor, and spreading out until it can seep in somewhere through some tiny crack or other break in the floor. While it may seem harmless, even rainwater can create water damage over time if left alone.

To help protect not only your home but also the efforts you've put into caring for and maintaining it, call SERVPRO of South Worcester at (508) 757-7885. We're always available to help you make your home dry, safe, and healthy again.

How to Identify Mold Damage in Worcester Homes and Businesses

10/27/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation How to Identify Mold Damage in Worcester Homes and Businesses Protect your property from mold damage by calling SERVPRO!

Don't Let Mold Take Over Your Property

Where there is moisture, there is the potential for mold. So, if you live in an area that is very rainy or prone to storms, you may know neighbors who have tackled it, or you may have experienced mold damage yourself. At SERVPRO, we are committed to helping homes and businesses in the Worcester area fight the effects of mold and prevent its spread.

There are a number of different ways to identify mold damage in Worcester properties. If extensive enough, it becomes easy to see with the naked eye and it is very obvious that a real problem is developing. Odor is another important indicator; properties containing mold often start to smell musty and dank. If you have had any recent issues with water damage, it is a good idea to inspect your property for signs of mold.

This quick fire guide to the most effective responses will help you take the right steps if you have identified mold in your home or business.

What Is Mold?

Mold is a form of microscopic fungi that thrives in moist, humid environments. So, if your home is both damp and warm, spores are likely to spread quickly. As mold does not need much to grow, it can infect walls, ceilings, floors, and all kinds of organic matter. It spreads by sending spores out on air currents or slight movements within the atmosphere. This means that sealing up affected areas is often the only way to prevent it from happening.

Why Is Mold So Harmful?

While the precise impact of mold on the human body is still hotly debated, we do know that it is not good to breathe in the spores. If you have mold in your property, SERVPRO strongly recommends that you call our team and get repairs started right away. There’s also a serious risk to the materials inside the house or business itself. As mold eats away at the organic matter, leaving it to spread can result in the destruction of possessions and furnishings.

How Is Mold Eliminated?

It must be understood that mold remediation cannot be carried out alone. To do so is to put your health at risk and it would likely be ineffective anyway. Special cleaning products (biocides, detergents, etc.) are needed, and industrial air movers and HEPA filters must be used to completely dry affected areas and repair underlying damp problems. Therefore, you need the help of a professional mold damage remediation team.

Where Can I Find Mold Damage Experts?

SERVPRO of South Worcester is a locally based mold damage repair and removal company. This means that we are in your area. We can respond to calls quickly, so if your situation feels like an emergency, we will treat it as one. Our experts understand that mold problems can be scary and they will talk you through the whole remediation process. Call us 24/7 at (508) 757-7885.

The types of flood damage that occur in the first hour of a water event typically cannot be prevented. The water intrusion is both massive and rapid. Whether from a storm surge, rising groundwater, or a burst water main, the initial water attack can cause significant loss. Your home's structural integrity, carpet staining from furniture, curtains, and other items that bleed color can all be damaged requiring rapid drying for a chance at restoration. SERVPRO has the certified technicians to deal with wetted documents, books, photographs, and other sensitive material.

Flood Water Damage Within the First Day
A lot of destruction can occur if your flooding event goes a single day without attention or remediation. After the initial damage of the flooding and exposure to the water, there are additional types of damage that can occur within the first 24 hours. While not all are irreversible, they can certainly create serious problems and lasting issues if water extraction is not performed.

Flood damage within the first 4 hours will harm furniture/furniture legs; warping and cupping of hardwood flooring, the ruin of drywall, waterlogged carpets and padding and appliances. Typically, groundwater contains contaminants such as fecal matter, pathogens, plant and soil debris and possible combustible materials and chemicals that will require specific PPE (personal protection equipment) for safe removal.

Mold Restoration Services

Mold Remediation Mold Restoration Services Active mold spores

Mold can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. Molds reproduce by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnifi cation. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on. Bacteria can start to grow within hours and mold can start to grow within days. Mold spores can lay dormant for years until an ideal growing condition develops, in which they start to fl ourish. Especially during the summer, the warm humid conditions are a perfect micro environment for mold growth. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur—particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture. Many types of molds exist. All molds have the potential to cause serious health effects. Molds can produce allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or even asthma attacks in people allergic to it. Others are known to produce potent toxins and/or irritants. Potential health concerns are an important reason to prevent mold growth and to remediate and clean any existing mold growth indoors. The purpose of mold remediation is to remove the mold to prevent human exposure and damage to building materials and furnishings. It is necessary to clean up mold contamination, not just kill it. Dead mold is still allergenic, and some dead molds are still potentially toxic! Applying the appropriate restoration procedures within the fi rst few hours of a water loss can save thousands of dollars in secondary damage. Before the growth of mold becomes visible, there will be a faint musty or earthy smell. In time, mold will appear on the outside of the wall as a stain or discoloration. In a standard situation, SERVPRO South Worcester professionals examine the structure for any visible signs of mold and remove the mold growth and excess spores returning the area back to normal levels. Some situations require the assistance of an Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional (IEP) with specialized equipment and services needed to assess and/or repair the structure. IEPs can test and clear a structure for mold by collecting air and surface samples. We handle mold remediation work on a daily basis and know when prompt action is required to prevent further mold growth. In the event mold is found on a property, the homeowner or business owner will be asked to approve and sign a work authorization form prior to remediation and clean up work beginning. If extensive mold growth is present, it may be recommended that occupants leave the affected area until the containment process is safely and successfully completed. SERVPRO South Worcester professionals are trained to control microbial problems in structures by promptly drying wet or damp materials according to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certifi cation (IICRC) standards and removing or replacing wet or damp porous materials, like drywall that have visible mold growth.

Do You Have A Plan?

8/22/2016 (Permalink)

How quickly your company can get back to business after a tornado, fire, or flood often depends on the emergency planning done today. The regular occurrence of natural disasters demonstrates the importance of being prepared for any emergency. While each situation is unique, your organization can be better prepared if you plan carefully, put emergency procedures in place, and practice for all kinds of emergencies. The following are basic measures business owners and managers can take to begin preparing. A commitment to begin planning today will help support your employees, customers, the community, local economy, and even the country. It also protects your business investment and gives your company a better chance for survival.

Develop a Business Continuity Plan.

Your organization’s risk needs will vary depending on the specific industry, size, scope and location. Begin by reviewing your business process flow chart, if one exists, to identify operations critical to survival and recovery. Carefully assess your internal and external functions to determine which staff, materials, procedures and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating. You should also establish procedures for succession of management.

Review Insurance Coverage.

Inadequate insurance coverage can lead to major financial loss if your business is damaged, destroyed or simply interrupted for a period of time. Insurance policies vary; check with your agent or provider about things such as physical losses, flood coverage and business interruption. Understand what your policy does and does not cover.

Prepare your Emergency Plan.

Your employees and co-workers are your business’ most valuable asset. Communication is central before, during and after a disaster. Include emergency information in newsletters, on your company intranet, in periodic employee e-mails and/or other communication tools.

Practice the Emergency Plan.

Some disasters will require employees to leave the workplace quickly. The ability to evacuate workers, customers and visitors effectively can save lives. If your business operates out of more than one location, establish evacuation procedures for each individual building. If your company is in a high-rise building, an industrial park, or even a small strip mall, it is important to coordinate and practice with other tenants or businesses to avoid confusion and potential gridlock.

Secure Your Facility and Equipment.

Install fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and detectors in appropriate places. Secure all entry and exit points and plan for mail safety. Plan what you will do if your building, plant or store is not usable. Secure valuable equipment.

Improve Cyber Security.

Protecting your data and information systems may require specialized expertise, but even the smallest business can be better prepared. Use anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date. Don’t open e-mails from unknown sources. Use hard-to-guess passwords. Protect your computer from intruders by using firewalls. Back up your computer data and download security protection updates known as patches regularly.

Be Ready with the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Program

National Preparedness Month is the perfect opportunity to share the benefits of having a readiness plan in place with your customers, business and family.

The SERVPRO® Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) will help ensure you and your business are “Ready for whatever happens.”

In the event of an emergency, the SERVPRO® Emergency READY Profile®, can help minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action in place for your facility. The ERP is a comprehensive document containing critical information about your business, including: Emergency Contact Information, Shut-off Valve Locations and Priority Areas. The ERP is also accessible online using your computer or tablet; download SERVPRO’s free Ready Plan app to access this information at any time using your smartphone or tablet.

The ERP establishes your local SERVPRO® Franchise Professional as your disaster mitigation and restoration provider, giving you access to over 45 years experience and a System more than 1,700 Franchises strong. Knowing what to do and who to call in advance is key to quick response and timely mitigation. Having a plan in place may help minimize the amount of time your business is inactive and get you back in the building following a disaster.

Preparation is the key to making it through any size disaster, whether it is a small water leak, a large fire or an area flood. The best time to plan for such events is not when the event happens, but well before it happens. No one ever plans on a disaster, but now, you can plan for it.

The ERP is a no cost assessment, all it requires is a little time, making it a great value that could save a lot of time in the future. Call SERVPRO of South Worcester to establish your Emergency READY Profile®.

10 Ways you can be prepared

If a disaster strikes, will you be ready? It is important to prepare before a disaster occurs. Consider the following steps to help you better prepare for an emergency situation.

  • Sign up for local alerts and warnings, download apps, and/or check access for wireless emergency alerts.
  • Develop and test emergency communication plans.
  • Assemble or update emergency supplies.
  • Learn about local hazards and conduct a drill to practice emergency response actions.
  • Participate in a preparedness discussion, training, or class.
  • Collect and safeguard critical documents.
  • Plan with neighbors to help each other and share resources.
  • Document property and obtain appropriate insurance for relevant hazards.
  • Make property improvements to reduce potential injury and property damage.
  • Hold a scenario-based continuity of operations tabletop exercise for your organization.

Emergencies can happen anytime to anyone. Take action now to protect yourself and your property.  Any questions please call SERVPRO South Worcester (508) 757-7885.

It's The Water You Don't See in your Home that's Scary

8/22/2016 (Permalink)

Water Damage It's The Water You Don't See in your Home that's Scary Water damage to your flooring can be a inconvenience but not with the professionals! Call SERVPRO of South Worcester! (508)757-7885.

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO of South Worcester have the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERVPRO of South Worcester professionals will answer your call with rapid action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used by your local SERVPRO Franchise Professionals.

  • Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls.
  • Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals to monitor the drying process.
  • Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
  • Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.
  • Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor- causing particles.

The bottom line? Your local SERVPRO of South Worcester has the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Like it never even happened.

Imagine its 8:00 p.m. on a Sunday, and you walk into your home after a relaxing vacation expecting to switch on the lights, put the kids to bed then get some rest yourself.

The only problem? A water pipe burst over the weekend, dumping thousands of gallons of water over your hardwood kitchen floor, your carpeted living room and your cement utility room. You realize this problem is far beyond the reach of your shop vac. What do you do now?

When it is your home or business that is underwater, mitigation cannot wait. You need mitigation to begin immediately. If water damage strikes you or your customers, give SERVPRO of South Worcester a call, any time, any day.

The cost of water damages can increase exponentially with time. Wood floors warp, dry wall soaks in moisture and mold develops in hard-to-reach areas of your home or business. The benefits of rapid mitigation offered by SERVPRO of South Worcester is two-fold: Your costs go down as potential hazards may be avoided, and your peace of mind goes through the roof.

If the unthinkable happens to your home or business, allow SERVPRO of South Worcester to help quickly turn your “before” into a “happily ever after.”

Smoke and Soot Damage

8/4/2016 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Smoke and Soot Damage Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Worcester Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.

Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of [[Franchise Name]] will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Celebrate Summer Safely

Summer is synonymous with barbecues, parades and fireworks displays; but along with all the festivities are plenty of visits to emergency rooms—especially during July. Each year, around 230 people are injured badly enough to require medical treatment after fireworks-related incidents, according to the U.S. SERVPRO® of South Worcester wants you to have an enjoyable and safe summer. Consider the following tips to help ensure your summer celebrations are disaster-free!

·        Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

·        The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

·        Keep children and pets away from grill area.

·        Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.

·        Never leave your grill unattended.

·        When using a charcoal grill, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

·        Anyone using fi reworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.

·        Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fi reworks. Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fi reworks that don’t go off or in case of fire. Children should never pick up fireworks that may be left over as they may still be active.

·        The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals.

SERVPRO® Pledges Ongoing Support to the American Red Cross Disaster Responder Program

Red Cross recognizes SERVPRO for their contribution to disaster preparedness and recovery efforts

Worcester, MA (Grassroots Newswire) June 1, 2016 -- The American Red Cross recently recognized SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration company, for participation in its Disaster Responder Program1.  As a Disaster Responder Program member, SERVPRO pledges a donation to the Red Cross in advance of disasters, allowing the organization to respond quickly and effectively to nearly 66,000 disasters annually, most of which are home fires. SERVPRO is entering their third year of partnership with the Red Cross; their donations to the organization to date exceed one million dollars.

According to statistics cited by the Red Cross, seven people die in a home fire each day in the U.S. Aiming to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent by the end of 2019, the Red Cross launched a Home Fire Campaign in October of 2014. The support of SERVPRO and other Disaster Responder Program members allows the Red Cross to pursue their home fire prevention goals while they continue to provide critical services to disaster victims.

“One of the reasons home fires account for the majority of the disasters the Red Cross responds to annually is that the risk for home fires exists all year long,” said Donny McKendall, owner of SERVPRO of South Worcester. “Statistics compiled by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)2 show the majority of home fires are related to unattended cooking accidents – and cooking is something most people do every day.”

Although SERVPRO’s business is helping business and home owners recover from fire, flood and other disasters, the company and its franchisees actively support disaster preparedness education, including fire prevention efforts. When disaster does strike, their relationships with major insurance companies combined with industry-leading job-management technology help smooth the path to rebuilding and restoration for home and business owners affected by the unexpected.

“SERVPRO’s commitment to the Red Cross Disaster Responder Program means that, when disaster strikes, homeowners can count on the Red Cross to address their immediate needs and supply essential services,” said McKendall. “Once the immediate emergency is under control, homeowners can count on the expertise of restoration specialists at SERVPRO of South Worcester to help them restore their property and move forward with their lives.”

Be Storm Smart - Be Storm Ready

5/3/2016 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere. Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms*:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 1,000 tornadoes
  • 2 landfalling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98 percent of all presidentially declared disasters are weather-related, leading to around 500 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage.* Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know Your Risk. The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can aff ect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action. Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.

Be an Example. Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

Types of Water Damages and What to Do About Them

3/23/2016 (Permalink)

When you have a water damage, don’t leave your property to chance. Call SERVPRO of South Worcester!

  • Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaff ected areas.
  • Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Do not use household fans to dry the structure; air flow could spread contaminants.
  • Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.

SERVPRO Named to Entrepreneur’s Top 10 Franchise List for 7th Consecutive Year

1/28/2016 (Permalink)

Cleanup and restoration franchisor retains top ranking in restoration services category and climbs to #4 ranking overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings

SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, maintains its hold on the top ranking in the Restoration Services industry for the 13th consecutive year and moves up to the number four spot overall in the 2016 Franchise 500 rankings from Entrepreneur magazine. This is the seventh consecutive year SERVPRO has been included in the magazine’s Top 10 list, standing out in a group of more than 951 franchises that qualified for inclusion in the list.

Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 selection process uses “objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation” to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. Some of the most important factors considered by Entrepreneur in developing the list each year are “financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system.”

“It’s exciting to be part of a dynamic organization that continues to grow and strives to always provide superior support for its franchisees, and by extension its customers,” said Donny McKendall, owner of SERVPRO of South Worcester. “The recognition that the company earns year after year in this prestigious list is confirmation of a commitment to excellence that starts at the top and is evident in the service that each franchisee provides to each and every customer.”

According to McKendall, a number of differentiators set SERVPRO apart from the competition and fuel the attractiveness of the company to both existing franchisees and would-be entrepreneurs looking for a strong business opportunity. Key among these are:

·         SERVPRO’s strength as a brand with a national footprint, wide-spread market penetration, laser-focused brand messaging, and the ability to create national partnerships with organizations such as the PGA TOUR and the American Red Cross.

·         SERVPRO’s commitment to being a learning organization, which keeps training and support at the forefront of the company’s culture and philosophy of success and helps franchisees plan, track, and deliver best-in-class services to consumers.

·         SERVPRO’s focus on continued development and support for proprietary software and systems to allow the company’s operational capacity to keep pace with an aggressive growth strategy.

Sue Steen, SERVPRO Industries, Inc., chief executive officer, adds, “One of the potential pitfalls of growing too quickly is outpacing your capacity to train and support the franchisees. SERVPRO® is a conservative company, and early on we took the time to build a strong system and put the building blocks in place to support growth without sacrificing support to our franchisees.”

“Today,” Steen continues, “as a mature franchise organization with more than 1,700 locations under a single brand, recognition like this makes it clear we are reaping the rewards of having laid a solid foundation and a framework to handle quick growth. As our brand continues to grow, we will continue our winning strategy of supporting and improving upon our infrastructure and investing resources in training and support.”

SERVPRO® specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration services, helping both commercial and residential customers recover from property damage emergencies “Like it never even happened.” For more information about SERVPRO® of South Worcester, contact them at (508) 757-7885 or stacy@SERVPROsouthworcester.com.

Be careful with space heaters!

1/19/2016 (Permalink)

The winter season is in full swing! The days are shorter and the temperatures are lower. No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather. In an effort to keep our homes and workplaces cozy, many people use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is responsible for an estimated $893 million in property damage annually. Heating is the second leading cause of residential fire deaths, making it important to review ways to help reduce the risk of a heating-related fire.

  • Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or a portable space heater. Have a three foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
  • Make sure the fi replace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
  • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

Test smoke alarms monthly. If your property does suffer fire damage, contact SERVPRO of South Worcester to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Preparing Your Property For Winter

1/4/2016 (Permalink)

Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business if you are not properly prepared. Whether it is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared, and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can lead to a damming effect, that can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  • Ask SERVPRO of South Worcester about completing an Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no cost assessment to your facility, and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

11/13/2015 (Permalink)

Each November, families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don’t practice safe cooking habits, your happy holiday could become hazardous very quickly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the main cause for home fires and injuries, with Thanksgiving being the peak day for cooking-related fires. Review the following safety tips to ensure you can enjoy a safe holiday.

  • Never leave cooking food unattended–stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If someone must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, they should turn off the stove.
  • Check food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while cooking. Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.
  • Keep the kids away from the cooking area. Enforce a “kid-free zone” and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove.
  • Keep anything flammable–pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains—away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.
  • Do not wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
  • Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup.
  • Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen. Contact the local fire department for training on the proper use of extinguishers.
  • Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens, and small appliances are turned off.
  • Install a smoke alarm near the kitchen, on each level of the home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside bedrooms. Use the test button to check it each month. Replace all batteries at least once a year.

Everyone at SERVPRO of South Worcester wishes you a safe and happy holiday season.

Is it safe to burn leaves?

10/15/2015 (Permalink)

With fall upon us, the question of the safety of burning leaves comes up.  Leaves pile up and bagging them for the city to take away can be a hassle.  Despite the inconvenience, you should not burn leaves.  Burning leaves can cause problems to an individuals’ heath as well as damage to the environment.

When leaves are burned, they can release several gasses and particulates that are hazardous to human health.  There is moisture in leaves which cause them to burn slowly and release soot, dust and other solid materials into the air.  These items, if breathed in, can cause respiratory problems.  Gasses that are released can also cause problems in the bloodstream if inhaled.

The particulates released into the air by burning can cause a serious drop in air quality.  Multiple leaf fires in an area greatly increase this risk.

An easy solution to burning that is actually beneficial to the environment is composting.  By composting leaves, a great soil conditioning agent is created!

Fire Prevention Month

10/8/2015 (Permalink)

October is Fire Prevention Month and an excellent time to examine the emergency preparedness plans, for your home and business, including your fire escape plan. Do you have a fire escape plan? Have you changed your smoke alarm batteries within the last year?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sets aside a designated week each October to focus on fire prevention. The 2015 focus is “Hear the Beep Where You Sleep.” The NFPA recommends installing smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.

Did you know that roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep?* Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half!

SERVPRO of South Worcester wants you to stay safe and prepare now to ensure you are ready for any disaster.

Fire Damage Help When You Need It

10/6/2015 (Permalink)

A fire can leave behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need a thorough professional cleaning. If your home or business suffers a fire, it is important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage until SERVPRO of South Worcester arrives. The following tips may help reduce damage and increase chances of a successful restoration.

DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer/refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Change HVAC filters; leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

DON'T:

  • Don’t attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of South Worcester.
  • Don’t attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting SERVPRO of South Worcester.
  • Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Do not consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water, as they may be contaminated.
  • If ceiling is wet, do not turn on ceiling fans. Wiring may be wet or damaged and can cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
  • Don’t send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

How often should I have my carpets cleaned?

Floods can happen - even in Worcester!

5/15/2015 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. It doesn’t matter if your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert–there is always potential for flood damage - even here in Worcester!

Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, does not mean you won't in the future.

If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way.

The sooner work begins, the sooner order can be restored. When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of South Worcester will help you take it back.

What do I do after a water damage?

4/7/2015 (Permalink)

When facing a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensure proper cleanup. When you have a water damage, don’t leave your property to chance. Call SERVPRO® of South Worcester.

Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
  • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture to a safe place.

Note: If exxposed to harmful waste, OSHA recommends a post-exposure meducal evaluation.  Consult your local health department or physician.

Deodorization - No Match for SERVPRO of South Worcester

3/18/2015 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard to reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

SERVPRO® of South Worcester provides specialized services that rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. Any restorable item in affected areas will be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including: furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts, and more.

SERVPRO® of South Worcester does not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance, they seek out and remove the sources of the odor. Ask your SERVPRO® of South Worcester Franchise Professional to explain the various deodorization methods available and which will work best for you.

If you or a customer suffer a fire damage or some other accident and require deodorization services contact SERVPRO® of South Worcester. Whether it’s fire, water or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we’ll help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Electrical Fire Prevention

1/15/2015 (Permalink)

A recent report from the National Fire Protection Association says US Fire departments respond to an estimated 48,000 electrical-related fires annually. Many electrical fires in the home or workplace are the result of faulty circuits, overloaded outlets, or electrical failures. In fact, some type of electrical failure or malfunction was cited as a factor contributing to ignition for 74 percent of residential fires. December and January are the peak months for electrical fires; this spike can be attributed to the increased amount of time spent indoors, which also increases the use of lighting, heating, and other appliances. Many electrical fires can be avoided if basic safety precautions are taken. Review the following safety tips to reduce your risk of an electrical fire:

  • Replace or repair damaged or loose electrical cords.
  • Avoid running extension cords across doorways or under carpets. Consider having additional outlets added by a qualified electrician so you do not have to use extension cords.
  • Avoid overloading outlets. Plug only one high-wattage appliance into each receptacle outlet at a time.
  • If outlets or switches feel warm, frequent problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuits, or flickering or dimming lights, call a qualified electrician.

'Tis the Season for Safety

12/12/2014 (Permalink)

Pretty lights and decorations add to the feel of the holiday season, but if they are not used properly your holidays can go from festive to frightening quickly. Fortunately, by following a few simple safety tips, you can greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season.

  • Place Christmas trees, candles, and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, and heat vents.
  • Purchase flame retardant metallic or artificial trees. If you purchase a real tree, make sure that it has fresh, green needles that aren’t easily broken. Keep live trees as moist as possible by giving them plenty of water.
  • Make sure that light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Use only sturdy tree stands designed not to tip over. Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees.
  • Keep anything that can catch on fire—pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains—away from your stove top.
  • Designate one person to walk around your home to make sure that all candles and smoking materials are properly extinguished after guests leave.
  • Smoke alarms save lives. Install a smoke alarm near your kitchen, on each level of your home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside bedrooms if you sleep with doors closed. Use the test button to check it each month. Replace batteries at least once a year.

SERVPRO® of South Worcester wishs you a safe and happy holiday season!

Protecting Your Property From a Worcester Winter

12/5/2014 (Permalink)

Cold weather can wreak havoc and cause costly damage to your home or business if you are not properly prepared. Whether it is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious propery damage. While you can’t control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared, and help take the sting out of winter weather. To help prevent weather-related damages, consider taking the following precautions before winter weather hits.

Leaves and other obstructions can lead to a damming effect, causing roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Clean chimneys and exhaust systems to ensure they are free of debris.
  • Test gas lines if they have been dormant to ensure they are in good working order with no leaks.
  • Inspect your property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Protect pipes from freezing by allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. Make sure all exterior pipes are properly insulated.
  • If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  • Make sure all exterior doors, garages, roll-ups and windows have sufficient weather stripping.
  • Ask a SERVPRO® of South Worcester professional about completing an Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no cost assessment to your facility, and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

Fire Extinguisher Information

11/3/2014 (Permalink)

A fire extinguisher can be a life saving tool when used correctly. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends individuals are properly trained in order to use and maintain an extinguisher. USFA says an extinguisher should only be used if:

  • You have alerted other occupants and someone has called the fire department;
  • The fire is small and contained to a single object, such as a wastebasket; You are safe from the toxic smoke produced by the fire;
  • You have a means of escape identified and the fire is not between you and the escape route; and
  • Your instincts tell you that it is safe to use an extinguisher.

Choosing the Proper Fire Extinguisher for Your Needs

Class A: For use with fires involving ordinary combustible materials such as cloth, wood, rubber, paper, and many plastics.

Class B: Used on fires involving flammable liquids, such as grease, gasoline and oil.

Class C: Suitable for use on fires involving appliances, tools, or other equipment that is electrically energized or plugged in.

Class D: For use on flammable metals and are often specific for the type of metal in question. These are typically found only in factories working with these metals.

Class K: For use on fires involving vegetable oils, animal oils, or fats in cooking appliances. These extinguishers are generally found in commercial kitchens, but are becoming more popular in the residential market.

Smoke Damage Information

11/3/2014 (Permalink)

A fire loss can result in complex damages because of the unique behavior of smoke. A trained professional should survey the loss site to determine the extent to which fire, smoke, heat, and moisture impacted building materials and contents.

SERVPRO of South Worcester knows smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor.  Their knowledge of building systems helps them investigate how far smoke damage may have spread. Here are some facts you may not know about smoke:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

The Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of South Worcester will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

  • Wet SmokePlastic and Rubber Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry SmokePaper and Wood  Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire ResidueProduced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire  Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
  • Fuel Oil SootFurnace Puff Backs  While “puff backs” can create havoc for homeowners, SERVPRO of South Worcester can, in most cases, restore the contents and structure quickly.
  • Other TypesTear gas, fingerprint powder and fire extinguisher residue Special loss situations require special care. SERVPRO of South Worcester is trained to handle even the toughest losses.

What is Your Fire Escape Plan?

10/16/2014 (Permalink)

Every second counts during a fire. In just a matter of moments, a small flame can turn into a major fire, making it critical to be prepared by having an escape plan in place. A survey conducted by the American Red Cross shows only 26 percent of families have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. Once a plan is developed, it is important to ensure everyone in the home understands the plan; the best way to do this is by practicing the escape plan at least twice a year. The following are a few suggestions to help you develop an emergency escape plan for your family.

  • Draw a map of each level of your home and show all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.
  • Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floor. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.
  • Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them.
  • Have a plan for everyone in your home who has a disability.
  • Practice your fire escape plan at night and during the daytime.

Before and After

8/25/2014 (Permalink)

Imagine it’s 8:00 p.m. on a Sunday, and you walk into your home after a relaxing vacation expecting to switch on the lights, put the kids to bed then get some rest yourself.

A water pipe has burst over the weekend, dumping thousands of gallons of water over your hard wood kitchen floor, your carpeted living room and your cement utility room. You realize this problem is far beyond the reach of your shop vac. What do you do now?

When it’s your home or business that’s underwater, mitigation can’t wait. You need mitigation to begin yesterday. If water damage strikes you or your customers, give SERVPRO of South Worcester a call immediately.

The cost of water damages can increase exponentially with time. Wood floors warp, drywall soaks in moisture and mold develops in hard-to-reach areas of your home or business.   The benefits of rapid mitigation by a SERVPRO Technician are two-fold: Your costs go down as potential hazards may be avoided, and your peace of mind goes through the roof.

So if the unthinkable happens to your home or business, allow SERVPRO of South Worcester to help quickly turn your “before” into a “happily ever after.”

Worcester - Only you can prevent wildfires!

7/17/2014 (Permalink)

Did you know, more than 72,000 U.S. communities are now at risk from wildfire? Every year, wildfires burn across the U.S., and more people are living where wildfires are a real risk. By working together, residents can make their property, and their neighborhood, much safer from wildfire. Keeping your property clear of debris and maintaining landscaping are easy and effective ways to prevent fuel for a wildfire. Keep flammable materials, like wood piles and propane tanks, at least 30 feet away from your home’s foundation. Wildfire can also spread to tree tops; help prevent this by pruning trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground. Keep your lawn hydrated and maintained. Following these simple tips can help protect you and your property, and reduce the intensity of a potential fire. For more information of these and other wildfire safetly tips, visit firewise.org

Worcester Summer Safety Tips

7/2/2014 (Permalink)

Each year, families and friends across the country enjoy the summer months with barbecues, camping trips, or by cooling off in a pool or lake. In order to enjoy these occasions, it is important to keep safety top of mind to ensure you have fun in the sun.

According to a recent study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 9,600 Americans are injured by fireworks each year. Another 5,000 are injured by charcoal/wood-burning and propane grill fires. A grill should always be supervised when in use. Keep children and pets a safe distance from the grilling area to prevent accidental burns or tipping of the grill.

If you enjoy lounging by the pool or going for a boat ride to cool off from the summer sun, make sure you exercise caution, especially when children are present. Only swim in approved areas and supervise children at all times when near the water.

The summer season should be a time to make memories and enjoy the great outdoors. The following tips, provided by the National Fire Protection Association, will help keep you safe all summer long.

  • When using a charcoal grill, only use starter fluids designed for barbecue grills; do not add fluid after coals have been lit.
  • When using a gas grill, ensure the hose connection is tight; check hoses for leaks. Applying soapy water to the hoses will easily and safely reveal any leaks.
  • Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD (personal floatation device) when boating, jet-skiing, tubing or water-skiing. Air-filled swimming aids, like water wings or inner tubes, are not substitutes for approved PFDs. An adult should always supervise children using these devices.
  • Be sure to extinguish all smoking materials and shut down motors and heating devices before fueling a boat. In case of a spill, wipe up fuel and check for fuel leakage and odors.
  • When camping, always use a flame retardant tent and set up camp far away from the campfire. Only use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns inside the tent, not liquid-filled eaters or lanterns.
  • Always build a campfire down wind from the tent area. Clear vegetation and dig a pit before building your campfire. Always extinguish the fire before going to sleep or leaving the campsite. To extinguish, cover with dirt or pour water over the fire.
  • Store liquid fire starter (not gasoline) away from your tent and campfire and only use dry kindling to freshen a campfire.
  • Consider leaving firework use to trained professionals. Stay back at least 500 feet from professional fireworks displays.

SERVPRO® of South Worcester wishes you a safe and happy summer!

The Science of Drying

6/9/2014 (Permalink)

Did you know, there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of South Worcester franchise professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers a water damage, SERVPRO of South Worcester franchise professional will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does “speed up Mother Nature” mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material–but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

For this reason, SERVPRO of South Worcester franchise professionals have been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. We also use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

The bottom-line? SERVPRO of South Worcester franchise professionals have the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Storm Damage Learn More About Wireless Emergency Alerts Example of a WEA

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are emergency messages sent by authorized government-alerting authorities through your mobile carrier. Government partners include local and state public safety agencies, FEMA, the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Weather Service.

Alerts received at the right time can help keep you safe during an emergency. With WEA, alerts can be sent to your mobile device when you may be in harm's way, without need to download an app or subscribe to a service. WEA may be used to share:

  • Extreme weather warnings.
  • Local emergencies requiring evacuation or immediate action.
  • AMBER Alerts.
  • Presidential Alerts during a national emergency.

A WEA will look like a text message. The WEA message will typically show the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert. The message will be no more than 90 characters.

Visit www.ctia.org/wea to learn more about Wireless Emergency Alerts, including how to determine if your mobile device is WEAcapable.

Some Myths About Lightning

5/22/2014 (Permalink)

According to the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), an average of 60 people are killed each year by lightning, and hundreds more are severely injured. Many times, these injuries are due to misinformation around the seriousness of thunderstorms and lightning. Here are a few of the most common myths about lightning.

Myth: If it is not raining, there is no danger from lightning.

Fact: Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur up to 10 miles away from rainfall.

Myth: If you are in a house, you are 100% safe from lightning.

Fact: A house is a safe place to be during a thunderstorm as long as you avoid anything that conducts electricity, including corded phones, electrical appliances, wires, TV cables, computers, plumbing, metal doors and windows.

Myth: Lightning never strikes the same place twice.

Fact: Lightning often strikes the same place repeatedly. The Empire State Building is hit nearly 100 times a year.

Myth: A lightning victim is electrified. If you touch them, you’ll be electrocuted.

Fact: The human body does not store electricity. It is perfectly safe to touch a lightning victim to give them first aid. Call 9-1-1 and begin CPR immediately.

Myth: If outside in a thunderstorm, seek shelter under a tree to stay dry.

Fact: Being underneath a tree is the second leading cause of lightning casualties.

Tools To Help You Be Prepared.

5/12/2014 (Permalink)

One of the best precautions you can take is to purchase a good quality weather radio. A weather radio is designed to alert you to dangerous weather situations, such as an approaching tornado. It allows you to be warned ahead of approaching storms providing you time to seek shelter. A weather radio is the most reliable source for weather alerts.

Weather radios have made many advancements over the years and are very affordable. Most basic weather radios average around $30 and can be programmed to only alert you for the weather alerts you choose.

When shopping for a weather radio, look for the following key features.

  • Reviewable alerts (you can scroll through alerts and turn off the siren for alerts you do not wish to hear).
  • Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) alert programming (alerts when specific counties are threatened, ensuring you only receive alerts for your county).
  • Ease of programming.

If you need help programming your weather radio, you can always contact your local National Weather Service Office or for additional information, including county codes for your state, visit the NOAA Weather Radio website at www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr

Be Storm Smart. Be Storm Ready.

5/7/2014 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere. Being prepared to act quickly can be critical to staying safe during a weather event.

In 2013, there were seven weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States.* These events included five severe weather and tornado events, a major flood event, and the western drought/heat wave. Overall, these events killed 109 people and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted.

Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know Your Risk

The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts (see right inset). Severe weather comes in many forms and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action

Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.

Be an Example

Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

SERVPRO of South Worcester can help. Check out the tips provided to help jump start your spring cleaning. A clean environment is a healthy environment. Improve your living and work spaces this spring. If you need a little help, don’t worry, SERVPRO of South Worcester has all the tools to make your home or business sparkle in no time!

  • Clean your work space. It doesn’t take long for clutter to pile up. Begin spring cleaning by decluttering and organizing your work space. Sort files and determine what you really need. Removing excess clutter will not only allow you to find things easier, but will also create a more productive environment.
  • Start an archive. While organizing your work space, you may come across files you don’t use daily, but still need to keep. By creating an archive, you can save these files and keep your desk clutterfree. Maintain your archive by scheduling one day a month to sort through files and keep files organized.
  • Organize your inbox. Is your inbox overloaded? Organize e-mails by creating folders within your inbox. Organizing files may require an initial time investment, but will be a tremendous timesaver in the future. Consider backing up important electronic files and programs as well.
  • Deep clean your facility, including the floors. Over time, floors bear the brunt of your daily business. If not properly maintained, they can become dull and dingy. Having floors deep cleaned can improve the overall look and cleanliness of your facility.
  • Hit the hidden areas. We all avoid the hated, hidden areas in our homes, but now is the time to face the monster dust bunny under the bed. Be ruthless!
  • Tackle the big projects first. We start with the best intentions to scrub down our homes from top to bottom, but somewhere in the middle, we run out of steam. Tackle the biggest projects first, or you may never get to them.
  • Yard Sale time! Don’t just chuck your unwanted items. Put them up for sale! You may be surprised to see what could bring in a couple of bucks.

What to do until help arrives

3/11/2014 (Permalink)

When facing a water damage, it is important to understand what type of water you are dealing with to ensure proper cleanup. There are three types of water: clean water, gray water and black water. Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean. The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated. Bacteria and other contaminants begin growing making the water hazardous. Black wateris highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster. Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

When you have a water damage, don’t leave your property to chance. Call your local SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals. Consider the following steps to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.

Damage from Clean Water

  • Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building, if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture to a safe place.
  • Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.
  • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Do not use televisions or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors.

Note: If exposed to harmful waste, OSHA recommends a post-exposure medical evaluation. Consult your local health department or physician.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

2/27/2014 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.*  The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fireescape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance. For more on emergency preparedness, contact SERVPRO of South Worcester.

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms.
  • Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm “chirps,” the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Teaming up to help you be READY!

2/18/2014 (Permalink)

The SERVPRO Franchise System is teaming up with the American Red Cross to help business and homeowners across the nation get READY for any disaster.

The American Red Cross Ready Rating™ program is a free, web-based program designed to help businesses, organizations and schools become better prepared for emergencies. Through the Ready Rating program website, readyrating.org, property owners complete a 123-point self-assessment of their level of preparedness for weather-related or other emergencies. The Ready Rating assessment also offers tips and best practices to help improve their level of preparedness.

“Through the generosity of SERVPRO®, the Red Cross will help empower workplaces to re-open more quickly after natural or man-made disasters such as water main breaks, medical emergencies, power outages, tornados, floods and hurricanes through the Ready Rating Program,” said Tom Heneghan, manager of Business Continuity Programs for Red Cross.

“Up to 40% of businesses never re-open their doors after such disasters; SERVPRO’s partnership will enable more businesses, schools and organizations to become better prepared. We are excited to have SERVPRO® join us in community outreach efforts to educate and highlight the importance of community preparedness in neighborhoods across the country.”

“This partnership just makes perfect sense,” said Rick Isaacson, Executive Vice President of Servpro Industries, Inc., “and truly completes the readiness equation for businesses and other property owners. The Red Cross Ready Rating Program allows individuals to assess their readiness for a disaster, so they can take all necessary steps before disaster strikes to protect their property from damage and loss. Heating Hazards

Fire Damage Heating Hazards Helpful tips to prevent fires this winter.

The winter season is in full swing—the days are shorter and the temperature is lower. No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather. In an effort to keep our homes and workplaces cozy, many people use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters and wood burning stoves. Heating is the second leading cause of home fire deaths, making it important to review ways to help reduce the risk of a heating-related fire.

  • Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.
  • Use heating equipment that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
  • All heaters need space. Keep flammable objects at least three feet away from heating equipment.
  • Plug space heaters directly into outlets, never into an extension cord or power strip.
  • When using fuel-burning heaters, use only the type of fuel specified by the manufacturer.
  • Install and maintain carbon monoxide and smoke alarms inside your home and business. Test alarms monthly.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off before leaving the room or going to bed.
  • When using a wood-burning fireplace, make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to help prevent sparks from flying into the room. Spent fireplace ashes should be cool before removing and putting them into a metal container. The container should be stored away from your home or business.

Avoiding Holiday Hazards

12/16/2013 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Avoiding Holiday Hazards December is the peak month for candle fires.

Pretty lights and decorations add to the feel of the holiday season, but if they are not used properly your holidays can quickly go from festive to frightening. Fortunately, by following a few simple safety tips, you can greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season.

Candle Safety
Candles are widely used throughout the holidays, and December is the peak month for home candle fires. The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) statistics show, more than half of all candle fires start because the candles were too close to flammable objects. Consider using flameless candles instead of real candles. However, if you do use traditional candles, keep them at least 12 inches from anything flammable, and remember to extinguish them when leaving a room or going to bed. Use sturdy candleholders that are not likely to tip over and place candles on clear, uncluttered surfaces.

Christmas Tree Safety
The NFPA also reports, local fire departments respond to an average of 250 Christmas tree related fires each year, with the majority of these fires caused by electrical problems. If you have an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant. If you choose a live tree, pick a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. The tree should also be clear of all exits. Make sure the tree has plenty of water every day. After the holidays, properly dispose of your tree. Dried-out trees can be a fire hazard and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside the home.

Decorative Lights
When purchasing decorative lights make sure they are properly labeled and have been inspected by an independent testing laboratory. It is also important to ensure you have the correct type of lights; some lights are designed for only indoor or outdoor use, but not both. Carefully inspect light strands before placing them. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than the number of light strings recommended by the manufacturer. Remember to turn off outside decorative lights and Christmas tree lights before leaving or going to bed.

Protect your property this Winter

12/9/2013 (Permalink)

Water Damage Protect your property this Winter Snow buildup can create and ice dam resulting in interior water damage.

Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business if you are not properly prepared. Whether it is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious property damage. While you can’t control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared, and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions before winter weather hits.

Leaves and other obstructions can lead to a damming effect, causing roof damage and interior water problems.

  • Ask SERVPRO of South Worcester Professionals about completing an Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no cost assessment to your facility, and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

The Behavior of Smoke

11/22/2013 (Permalink)

Fire Damage The Behavior of Smoke There are many types of smoke. Call SERVPRO to help clean it up.

A fire loss can result in complex damages because of the unique behavior of smoke.  A trained professional should survey the loss site to determine the extent to which fire, smoke, heat and moisture impacted building materials and contents.

SERVPRO of South Worcester knows smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor.  Our knowledge of building systems helps us investigate how far smoke damage may have spread.  Here are some facts that you may not know about smoke:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.

  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping though the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

  • There are two different types of smoke - wet and dry.  As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.  Before restoration begins, a SERVPRO of South Worcester professional will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.  The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

    10 Key Fire Safety Tips

    11/12/2013 (Permalink)

According to the US Fire Loss Clock, in 2011, a fire department responded to a fire every 23 seconds.  Structural fires were reported every 65 seconds.  Tragically, fires claimed an average of nine lives per day.

Though some fire are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable.  The following tips can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your home or business.

    1.     Watch your cooking. Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food.  Never allow young children around the stove or oven, especially if they are not closely attended.

    2.     Give space heaters space. Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that is flammable.

    3.     Smoke outside. If you must smoke inside, have a sturdy, deep ashtray.  Never smoke in bed.

    4.     Keep matches and lighters out of reach. Keep matches and lighters in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.

    5.     Inspect electrical cords. Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

    6.     Be careful when using candles. Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn.  Blow them out before you leave the room or go to sleep.

    7.     Have a fire escape plan. Make a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

    8.     Install smoke alarms. Install alarms on every level of your home or office and inside bedrooms.  Interconnect them so they all sound at once.

    9.     Test smoke alarms. Test alarms once a month.  Replace batteries once per year or as needed.

    10.   Install sprinklers. Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance of saving your property.
